Common Way to Record pre-9th High School Level Courses
Most homeschool parents just list pre-9th grade courses under 9th grade.
Then they add a [*] next to the course name, with a note saying "taken before 9th"

How to Record Pre-9th Grade Classes at freedu.us
It kind of makes sense—they're high school-level classes, right? But this approach can get messy.
Homeschool Mom
My transcript looks messy and confusing...
If you simply list these courses along with your 9th-12th grade classes, it can look like your student was overloaded. Plus, it makes it hard to see which courses were done when.
That's why freedu.us has a dedicated form for pre-9th high school level courses. Let's take a look at how the form works!
Better Way to Record Pre-9th High School Level Courses
The better way? Create a dedicated section. Label it something like "Pre-9th High School Level Courses."
This makes it clear that these are early accomplishments, not part of the regular high school load.
In this section, list the course name, the year it was taken, and any credit if it counts as high school credit. Keep it simple, and it’ll be much easier for admissions officers to understand.
What to Include in Pre-9th Grade Courses
The most common subjects including are:
Math: Courses like Algebra I or Geometry completed before 9th grade.
Foreign Languages: High school-level language courses started early.
The less common subjects including are:
Science: Advanced courses such as Biology.
Students aiming for STEM fields often need to take Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. But some students finish a few of these early and then dive deeper into subjects they love. In that case, they list these required subjects under the pre-9th High School Level Courses.
You've learned the pre-9th grade courses on the transcript now. Great job!
But what about GPA and credit?
Homeschool Mom
Do these courses count for high school credits and GPA?
This part can be tricky.
Do Pre-9th HS Level Courses Count as High School Credit?
In California, ONLY high school-level math and foreign language courses taken before 9th grade count for high school credit and GPA. So, if your child finished Algebra I or Spanish I early, you can add it to their high school transcript. It will count toward their GPA.
But science and social studies don't count for high school credit. They can't be added to the GPA.
Mia
it's a strange rule, to be honest 🥺
Keep in mind, other states have different rules. Some might allow more subjects to count, while others are stricter. Always check your state's homeschooling rules to be sure.
At freedu.us, our free transcript maker makes it easy to handle these situations:
For courses that count for credit, simply mark them with the appropriate credit value. For example: "Algebra I (1 Credit)".
If the course doesn't count for credit, list it under the "Pre-9th Grade" section without assigning any credit. Our form helps keep everything organized and clear.
Guidelines for Including Pre-9th Grade Courses
Only include courses that align with high school-level standards.
Keep Records: Maintain detailed documentation like grades, syllabi. It will be included in the document called course description.
